A Spendee alternative that reads every line of the receipt

Spendee organizes money into wallets: a cash wallet, a bank wallet, a wallet for a trip, each with its own currency. It can sync bank accounts, and couples and roommates share wallets. If that is how you like to think about money, it does the job well.

People usually look for a Spendee alternative for one of three reasons: they don't want to connect a bank, they want a receipt broken into its items rather than one total, or they spend in several currencies and are tired of keeping a wallet per currency. Here is a supermarket run in Barcelona: food for a picnic, sunscreen and two postcards, paid in euros on a card from home.

In Sorayli, one scan reads the six lines and the discount, keeps the receipt in euros, and converts it to your own currency at the rate for October 3. The food lands in Food & Dining and the sunscreen in Personal Care, so a week abroad shows what went on eating and what went on everything else. You don't open a euro wallet first, and the card and cash purchases sit in the same list.

In Spendee, the same trip usually means a euro wallet, or adding the purchase to your main wallet with an exchange rate you set. Its receipt scanner fills in one transaction from the photo. 03Who should stay with Spendee

• You want your bank transactions pulled in automatically. Spendee lists bank sync on every plan, the free one included. Sorayli never connects to a bank.
• You share a wallet with a partner or roommates. Spendee's shared wallets put everyone's spending in one place. Sorayli's Family plan gives each person a private ledger instead.
• You track PayPal or a crypto wallet next to your cards. Spendee's App Store listing names both. Sorayli has no accounts or balances.
• You want the lowest price for a paid plan. Spendee Plus costs $14.99 a year.

04Where Sorayli fits better

05Moving from Spendee to Sorayli

Spendee's pricing page lists export on every plan. Export your transactions, and if the file isn't already a CSV, save it as one from a spreadsheet. Sorayli's CSV import, on the web and in the iPhone and Android apps, finds columns by their headings: Date, Title, Amount, Currency, Type, Category, Description and Notes. Before you import:

1. 1Rename the column that holds the transaction name to Title, if it has another heading.
2. 2Keep a Currency column for wallets that weren't in your base currency; rows without one use your base currency.
3. 3Add a Type column with expense or income on each row, and make every amount positive. A row with no type comes in as an expense.
4. 4Rename categories Sorayli doesn't have, or they come in uncategorized. Columns it doesn't recognize are ignored.

Old transactions arrive as whole amounts, as they were in Spendee. Receipts you scan from then on are split into items. Keep your Spendee export as an archive.
