Toshl has been a favourite of travellers and expats for years: it handles almost 200 currencies, including 30 cryptocurrencies, runs on iPhone, Android and the web, and on its Medici plan connects to more than 13,000 banks and financial services. On Pro you can attach up to four photos to an entry, which many people use for receipts.
A photo stored with an entry is still an entry you typed. If you want the app to read the receipt, item by item, and file each thing under its own category, that is where Sorayli differs. Toshl's column below comes only from Toshl's website and App Store listing, read on October 6, 2026. Sorayli is not affiliated with Toshl.

02A convenience-store receipt from Tokyo
Here is a quick stop at a convenience store in Tokyo on a rainy evening: dinner, a drink, an umbrella and plasters, paid with a transit card.

In Sorayli, the scan reads five lines in yen, files dinner under Food & Dining and the umbrella under Shopping, and converts the ¥1,638 to your own currency at the rate for October 5. Yen has no decimals, and Sorayli keeps it that way.
In Toshl, you add an expense of ¥1,638, choose a category, and attach the photo if you're on Pro. Toshl converts it with its own exchange rates. If you want the umbrella and the dinner apart, you add them as separate entries. On a two-week trip, that difference is the time it takes to type every receipt.

03Who should stay with Toshl
- You want bank accounts and cards synced automatically. Toshl Medici connects to more than 13,000; Sorayli connects to none.
- You track crypto. Toshl lists 30 cryptocurrencies; Sorayli tracks spending, not holdings.
- You want the lowest yearly price. Toshl Pro is $19.99 a year on the US App Store.
- You like tagging entries with a location, which Toshl Pro offers, and you're happy typing purchases in.
04Where Sorayli fits better
- You want receipts read for you, line by line, instead of typed and photographed.
- You want each purchase converted at the rate for its own date, so a trip's numbers stay tied to the day you paid. How multi-currency tracking works
- You don't want an app connected to your bank. See our guide to tracking expenses without linking your bank.
- You live abroad and shop in local supermarkets. See Sorayli for expats and our guide to tracking spending abroad.
- Number of currenciesToshl
Toshl lists almost 200, crypto included. Sorayli supports 149.
- Reading receiptsSorayli, clearly
Sorayli reads each line into its own entry. Toshl attaches photos to entries you type.
- Automatic bank importToshl, clearly
Toshl Medici syncs banks. Sorayli has no bank connection by design.
- Price of a paid planToshl, clearly
Toshl Pro is $19.99 a year. Sorayli Pro is $69.99 a year, with a free plan that includes 10 scans a month.
- Platformseven
Both run on iPhone, Android and the web.
- Keeping your bank out of itSorayli
Both work without a bank on their lower plans. Sorayli never offers a connection at all.
Our judgment from the two apps' own pages, not a score.
05Moving from Toshl to Sorayli
Every Toshl plan exports CSV. Sorayli's CSV import, on the web and in the iPhone and Android apps, finds columns by their headings: Date, Title, Amount, Currency, Type, Category, Description and Notes. Open Toshl's file in a spreadsheet first:
- Rename the column with each entry's description to Title.
- Keep the currency column, headed Currency, so entries in other currencies keep theirs; rows without one use your base currency.
- Add a Type column with expense or income, and make every amount positive. A row with no type comes in as an expense.
- Rename categories Sorayli doesn't have, or they come in uncategorized. Columns it doesn't recognize are ignored.
Photos attached in Toshl don't come across in a CSV file. Keep Toshl's PDF report with receipt photos, on Pro, as your archive.
