A receipt scanner built for work reads the total, the date and the shop, because that's what an expense report needs. A budget needs something else. A $62 supermarket receipt might be $41 of food, $13 of cleaning products and $8 of medicine, and lumping it into one category hides where your money went. So for each app below we asked what a person budgeting at home cares about: what it reads from the receipt, whether it needs a bank, what it costs, and how you get your data out.
Every fact about another app comes from its own website, help center or App Store page, read on October 6, 2026, and listed in the sources. Sorayli is our app; we've placed it by the job it does best.

03Why line items matter for a budget
Here is a pharmacy receipt that mixes three kinds of spending. An app that reads the total files $21.91 under one category. An app that reads every line files four purchases.

Read by item, that's $6.49 of Healthcare, $9.98 of Personal Care after the shampoo discount, and $4.29 of food. If you have a monthly budget for food, only the granola bars belong in it. Our guide to reading a grocery receipt explains the codes and discount lines most receipts use.
04Expensify: best for free, unlimited scanning of totals
Expensify says every personal account includes unlimited free SmartScans, and SmartScan reads the amount, the date and the merchant. Free accounts can also forward receipts by email, track distance, enter expenses by hand and export to CSV or a spreadsheet. Categories and tags, though, need a paid workspace, so for a budget you'd sort spending yourself.
Drawbacks: one total per receipt, and the app is designed around reports for an employer. Pick it if you want free scanning for records, not budgeting. Our Sorayli vs Expensify comparison covers personal use in detail.
05Sorayli: best for budgeting by item
Sorayli reads the shop, the date, every line with its quantity and price, discounts, tax, the total and the currency, then saves each line as its own purchase with a suggested category you can change before saving. It never connects to a bank. Budgets with alerts, a subscriptions list and spending in any currency come with every plan. How receipt scanning works.
The Free plan includes 10 scans and 10 AI questions a month and 2 budgets; Pro is $9.99 a month or $69.99 a year with no monthly scan limit. Exports to CSV and JSON come with Pro and Family. Compare plans.
Drawbacks: it doesn't produce expense reports for an employer. Pick it if you want to know what you spend on food, toiletries or medicine, not just at which shop.
06Smart Receipts: best for exports and reports
Smart Receipts serves freelancers and small businesses as well as personal use. Its AI reads the merchant, date, total and tax. There's a free plan on mobile; Pro is $99.99 a year or $12.99 a month and Max is $139 a year or $17.99 a month. PDF, CSV and ZIP exports come with Pro and Max, and Max adds a read-only bank connection for the US and Canada. It runs on iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Android and the web.
Drawbacks: no line items, and the paid plans cost more than most budgeting apps. Pick it if you need tidy exports for taxes or a side business.
07Foreceipt: best for tax categories and currencies
Foreceipt reads receipts, suggests a category and detects the currency, supports all currencies, and can bulk-import bank transactions from CSV or PDF files. It shares Excel or PDF reports for tax filing and runs on iPhone, Android and the web. Its App Store page lists Individual plans at $6.99 a month or $59.99 a year, with a free plan that has limited scans.
Drawbacks: its pages don't describe reading individual items, and it leans toward the self-employed. Pick it if your receipts feed a tax return.
08SimplyWise: best for emailed receipts on iPhone
SimplyWise's App Store page says its scanner captures the store name, date, tip, sales tax and total, imports receipts from Gmail, Outlook, Amazon, Walmart and PayPal, and exports PDF, JPEG or Excel reports. It's free to download with in-app plans, including annual options listed from $19.99 to $59.99.
Drawbacks: aimed at small business owners and contractors, and the pricing has many tiers. Pick it if most of your receipts arrive by email.
09Wallet by BudgetBakers: receipts and bank sync in one app
Wallet lists receipt scanning and storage among its features, alongside multi-currency tracking and imports from CSV, XLS or OFX files. Its free tier is for manual tracking; bank sync needs Premium. Its pages don't say whether a scan reads the amounts or only stores the picture, so check that in the app before relying on it.
Drawbacks: the scan behavior isn't documented. Pick it if you want one app that can grow into bank sync. See our Wallet by BudgetBakers alternative page.
10Groceries Tracker: best for food shopping only
Groceries Tracker reads each item on a grocery receipt with its category, discount and store, and shows where the things you buy cost less. The free plan includes 13 receipt uploads in total and 20 hand-entered receipts a month; Premium is $50 a year and adds unlimited uploads, multi-currency and export. It runs on the web, iPhone and Android.
Drawbacks: it's built for groceries, not your whole budget, and the free uploads run out. Pick it if food is the only spending you want to watch. For tracking prices specifically, see our list of grocery price tracker apps.
11Receipt rewards apps do a different job
Fetch and Ibotta also ask for photos of your receipts, but for rewards, not budgets. Fetch turns receipts into points you redeem for gift cards. Ibotta gives cash back on offers you add before you shop, paid out once you reach $20. Neither tells you what you spent on what. You can use one alongside a budgeting app: photograph the receipt for the rewards, then scan it again to record it.
12How to choose
- You want to see spending by category, item by item: Sorayli, or Groceries Tracker for food alone.
- You only need a copy of each receipt and its total: Expensify, free.
- Your receipts are for taxes or a side business: Smart Receipts or Foreceipt.
- Your receipts arrive by email: SimplyWise.
- You might want bank sync later: Wallet.
If you'd rather not connect a bank at all, our list of budget apps that don't link your bank covers the wider field, and our guide to organizing receipts covers what to keep on paper.
