Trail Wallet is gone: an alternative for tracking travel spending

Trail Wallet's developer stopped updating it in 2022 and warned that its backups were no longer reliable. If you still have it on a phone, export your trips first. Then here is how Sorayli covers the same job, and where it doesn't.
Seen from above: a passport, a boarding pass, two crisp receipts in euros and an iPhone 17 Pro in cosmic orange.

Trail Wallet was a simple, much-loved travel budget app for iPhone: add an amount in the local currency, pick a category, and see what a trip cost. In September 2022 its developer announced he would no longer provide support or updates, because the app's backup system had become unreliable from iOS 16 and modernising it was too much work. Its product page now says it is no longer available.

This page covers two things: getting your trips out of Trail Wallet before anything happens to your phone, and what to use next. Everything about Trail Wallet here comes from its developer's own site, read on October 6, 2026. Sorayli is not affiliated with Trail Wallet or Voyage Travel Apps.

01First, save your trips

  1. Open Trail Wallet and go to the Summary screen.
  2. Tap the Share icon and choose All Trip Data.
  3. Choose Export as CSV and save the file somewhere outside the phone, such as email or cloud storage.
  4. If you attached receipt photos, use Export Images too. The developer notes it can take a while with many photos.

03A shop receipt from Lisbon

Here is a small shop run in Lisbon for a picnic on the viewpoint: bread, cheese, oranges, a bottle of wine and sunscreen, paid by card.

An illustrative receipt; the shop and prices are examples. Portuguese receipts include IVA in the prices, so there is no separate tax line.

In Trail Wallet you would have typed €18.61, picked a category and maybe tagged it with the trip. In Sorayli, one photo reads the five lines and the discount, keeps the receipt in euros, and converts it at the rate for October 4. You don't look up the rate or type the amount.

To see a trip as a whole, file flights, stays and transport under the Travel category and look at the weeks you were away. Sorayli has no separate trip budgets; its budgets run by calendar month. Our guide to tracking spending abroad shows a routine that works with that.

04Moving your Trail Wallet trips into Sorayli

Sorayli's CSV import, on the web and in the iPhone and Android apps, finds columns by their headings: Date, Title, Amount, Currency, Type, Category, Description and Notes. Open the CSV you exported from Trail Wallet in a spreadsheet:

  1. Rename the column with each item's name to Title, and the amount column to Amount.
  2. Make sure there is a Currency column with each row's three-letter currency code, such as EUR or THB, so every purchase keeps its own currency. Rows without one use your base currency.
  3. Add a Type column with expense on each row; a row with no type comes in as an expense anyway.
  4. Rename categories Sorayli doesn't have, or they come in uncategorized. Tags and other columns it doesn't recognize are ignored.

Keep the original export and the image folder as your archive; photos don't come across in a CSV file.

05Where Sorayli is not a like-for-like swap

  • No per-trip budget. Sorayli's budgets are monthly, by category.
  • No tags. Sorayli organizes by category and date.
  • A paid plan beyond the free one. Free covers 10 receipt scans a month and unlimited typed entries; a long trip with many receipts may need Pro.

If those matter more than reading receipts, compare the Toshl alternative and Spendee alternative pages, which cover two other multi-currency trackers, and our list of budget apps that don't link your bank.

Is Trail Wallet discontinued?

Its developer stopped providing support and updates in September 2022, and its product page now says it is no longer available.

Can I still get my data out of Trail Wallet?

If the app still opens on your phone, yes: Summary, then the Share icon, All Trip Data, Export as CSV. Export Images saves the photos.

Does Sorayli work offline while travelling?

The iPhone and Android apps keep a copy of your recent data on the phone, so you can look through it without a connection. Scanning a receipt needs a connection.

Does Sorayli convert currencies automatically?

Yes. Each purchase keeps the currency you paid in and is converted to your base currency at a daily rate from the purchase date or up to 7 days before.
